A Story to Review Vocabulary

Here is a mini-story split into 3 chapters to help you review the language above. You can listen as you read here.

Chapter 1 – Health and Fitness

Tony was 32 years old and lived in London. He worked long hours in a white-collar job as an accountant. He often felt stressed out, and his doctor warned him that if he continued to lead a sedentary lifestyle, he might develop chronic diseases. So, Tony decided to change. He started doing exercise every morning and sometimes went down the gym after work. At first, he hated working out, but soon he enjoyed strength exercises and even some weightlifting. His main goal was to get in shape and feel more energetic. At the same time, he changed his diet. He gave up fast food and junk food, ate more homemade food, and tried to follow a balanced diet with higher nutritional value. After a few months, his physical and mental wellbeing improved a lot.

Chapter 2 – Work

With his new energy, Tony began thinking about his future. He had always worried about job security in accountancy, especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence. It was very possible that robots and automation would replace a lot of jobs like his. He wanted better career prospects, so he took a career break to study computers. It wasn’t easy, but after some training, he managed to pivot career and apply for jobs in IT. During interviews, he explained his reason for this new direction was that technology was creating new jobs for the future, and he wanted to be a part of that. Finally, Tony was offered a junior IT role in an office. The dynamics of the workplace were very different—lots of meetings, lots of teamwork. At times, he was still stressed out, but he tried to cope with stress by jogging in the evenings, which helped him keep a better work–life balance.

Chapter 3 – Technology

Tony’s new job encompassed many different fields, including computers, mobile phones, and artificial intelligence. Most of his colleagues were digital natives, but Tony, as a digital immigrant, had to learn fast. Fortunately, he became quite tech-savvy and even worked as a digital nomad when travelling outside London. Every day he went online to check emails and often surfed online to learn about new developments in AI. He was extremely careful about online safety, data protection, and online privacy, because they were an integral part of his job. Of course, like everyone, Tony sometimes scrolled his feed on different social media platforms, even at work. But he made sure his boss couldn’t see. In fact, Tony was a very responsible person and he also knew that too much scrolling could lead to social media addiction and a short attention span, so he tried to limit his use. Now after 1 year in his new job, Tony felt proud. He had improved his health, built a new career, and found confidence in the fast-changing world of technology.
